CEAG Member Track Day
It’s been a while since I’ve picked up the camera to shoot any automotive related content and it’s not due to a lack of meets or shows happening, but rather feeling quite uninspired to shoot at those events. It wasn’t until Brandon invited me out to one of his member track days at Rocky Mountain Motorsports that I started to feel excited again about getting behind the lens again. Capturing motorsports is just so much more rewarding and fun to me versus taking pictures of stationary cars, so I’m grateful that I got this opportunity to see and shoot cars doing car things.
With 30 minute sessions and only having the ability to cross the track in-between sessions, I was quite restricted to where I could be. This time I wanted to try and camp out at all of the designated media spots that RMM has marked out on their map, which I was able to do. I couldn’t believe how fast time passes out there. I wasn’t keeping track of time and got back to the pits for around 2:30pm, thinking it must only be about noon or just a little past. It was awesome to see the entirety of the track from all of the different angles and views. I’m looking forward to doing more of this style content and getting better at it as well. There should be more coming up later this season.
It took me a while to get into the groove again and to actually achieve what I was aiming for. I ended up taking over 1000 photos that day, but only about 150 turned out decent, and another 80ish of those are good enough to really use. I also didn’t realize that I had a dirty lens that day too… I ended up having to do some extra editing to clean up the images… just another lesson learned.

As a side note, I’ve been having some challenges with retaining high image quality on the blog, unfortunately. I’m gonna have to look into some alternative image hosting so that I can share the best quality possible - for now I guess we’ll need to deal with it. If you are a CEAG member, I will be sharing full-res images with the group for you to oogle in crystal sharp goodness.

I met up with the guys at 9AM that morning to take advantage of the entire day and get in as much time to shoot. There’s also a bit of a hike you need to take to get into the first accessible media spot without needing to cross. Once you get there, it’s easy to jump from spot to spot in-between sessions.
This photo ended up being my absolute favourite from that day. Since I’m still learning and practicing shooting techniques, I don’t typically get a great shot every time I click the shutter. The entirety of the M2 was in perfect focus and I was able to get that background motion blur I was aiming for.
It looks like it could totally be an ad for BMW (hire me BMW).
Another favourite from the day. Johnson’s S2000 just looked incredible racing around the track. The red contrasts well with the surrounding greenery.
If you haven’t noticed, I love how eye-catching red is on cars. Another photo I was quite pleased with that day.

Brandon hit a personal best that morning even though he was experiencing some tie rod issues. He decided to retire his RSX for the remainder of the day and walked away with that win. It was his first session of the year as well, so I’m sure he’s going to be pushing come August/September.
Johnson was kind enough to sit in the cuck chair so that Brandon could still spend time on the track beating his S2000 around the corners.
